College of Saint Rose Offers Four New Degrees

Elevates Management, Entrepreneurship, Marketing and Human Resource Management Programs to Full Majors

ALBANY (October 28, 2014) -- Responding to the growing demand for graduates with specialized business acumen, The College of Saint Rose now offers degrees in four new business majors.

The Huether School of Business at Saint Rose has elevated what were once business concentrations to full majors in management, entrepreneurship, marketing and human resource management. All four majors will provide students with the opportunity to explore and develop as business leaders in a variety of settings and industries or who want to be their own boss. Internships required of all business students will give them practical experience in their fields of study before they graduate, a significant advantage in today’s job market. Graduates of all four majors earn the bachelor of science degree.

Classes are taught in the College’s new, $3.5 million Huether School of Business, which provides the latest technology, additional classrooms and seminar rooms, and dedicated spaces for internship coordination, entrepreneurship and leadership programming.

“Employers today seek graduates who are already trained in such specialized business fields as marketing and human resource management. Elevating these four programs to full majors tells potential employers that our graduates are business-ready and with their internships have exactly the degrees, training and experience that today’s hyper-competitive global market demands,” said Dr. Hadi Salavitabar, Saint Rose vice president for academic affairs and provost.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates that jobs in all four fields have a bright outlook in the next 10 years, with growth estimated at up to 15 percent.

Students in the management major will choose from three specialized tracks in which to focus their area of interest and future career objectives:

• a “leadership and managerial skills” track that will expose them to an interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving, conflict and change management, understanding how teams work, and developing the ability to be effective team leaders;

• a “sport management” track that will provide students with a firm foundation in the human relations, marketing and ethical and legal aspects that influence and shape the business of sports;

• an “international business management track,” which will expose students to an interdisciplinary approach to conducting business internationally and examine a wealth of issues including cultural differences, the role of markets and governments, differences in living standards, education and wealth, and ethics.

Students in the management major will engage in a variety of learning experiences that will prepare them to become competent business leaders in any field they choose.

The entrepreneurship major introduces students to the dynamic world of new venture creation and small enterprises, the preeminent catalysts for growth, innovation and employment in today’s economy. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the major prepares students to adapt and apply the concepts and methods of business education to the unique challenges of the entrepreneurial environment and small business management. Wide-ranging career opportunities are available to individuals trained in the special characteristics and problems of small business strategy, information management, operations, marketing and finance.

Marketing encompasses the total system of interacting business activities designed to plan, price, promote and distribute products and services offered by both profit and not-for-profit centered organizations. To prepare individuals for a career in marketing, this major concentrates on developing the student’s ability to make ethical decisions in the areas of advertising, sales force management and marketing to businesses as well as consumers in both national and international arenas. Wide-ranging career opportunities are available to individuals trained in the general and specialized marketing functions, including marketing assistants, consultants and directors in large and small marketing firms, roles in brand management, electronic and social media, public relations, client relations and product development.

The human resource management major focuses on the knowledge, skills, and techniques used to attract, retain and effectively manage human resources in organizations. Courses cover the fundamentals of employment law; human resource functions such as staffing, compensation and performance appraisal; and labor relations. The coursework complies with the competencies required by the Society for Human Resource Management, the field's premier professional organization that administers certification exams to professionals. A wide-range of career opportunities is available to individuals trained in human resources management, including recruitment, training, human resources generalists and specialists, consultants and lawyers.
