Sue Courtney & Shirly KleinerOverland Park, KS (July 6, 2012) –The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP),, proudly announces that Susan Courtney, PhD, Kansas City Kansas Community College (Kansas) and Patricia Abels, PhD, The University of Findlay (Ohio), have received the 2012 ACBSP International Teaching Excellence Award.

The announcement was made at a "Salute to Regions Luncheon” held June 17 during the ACBSP Annual Conference in Baltimore. As the 2012 Teaching Excellence Award recipients for their respective regions, Courtney and Abels were honored with other regional recipients, each of whom received a medallion and a $100 check. From that group, two International Teaching Excellence Award recipients were announced, one from a baccalaureate/graduatedegree-granting institution (Abels) and one from an associate degree-granting institution (Courtney). Each was presented with an engraved plaque and a $500 check.

Marvin Hunt, PhD, Dean of The Division of Business and Continuing Education at KCKCC, who nominated Courtney for the award, writes: "Lakshmy Sivaratnam, a professor in our division, once told me that she regularly hears from former students who come back to KCKCC and ask about one professor — Dr. Courtney. They ask if she is still teaching and express what an impact she has had on them during their careers. I am always proud to know that one of our great faculty team members has made such an impression on a student. After all, isn’t that what teaching and learning is all about? We strive every day to positively shape the lives of our students.”

Paul Sears, PhD, Dean of The College of Business at Findlay, writes: "One of the initiatives that exemplifies Dr. Abel’s pioneering spirit as an educator is her piloting of a new opportunity for students in accounting (as well as finance and economics) to obtain a CMA (Certified Management Accountant) certificate as part of our undergraduate and graduate academic programs. The opportunity for a student to earn a CMA license as well as an academic business degree will help our graduates stand out, provide them with a tangible skill set valued by employers, and help demonstrate the quality of our academic program.”

ACBSP recognizes the significance of the classroom teacher to the mission of degree-granting institutions. It is for this reason that the Associate Degree Commission of ACBSP established the International Teaching Excellence Award in 1995 to recognize outstanding classroom teachers. In 2002, the Baccalaureate Degree Commission created a similar award to recognize excellence in teaching at the baccalaureate degree level. ACBSP is the only specialized accrediting body for business schools that presents an award recognizing excellence in teaching.

"It is more important than ever for business programs to produce graduates who are ready to enter the global marketplace,” said Douglas Viehland, ACBSP executive director. "ACBSP has a mission to develop, promote and recognize best practices that contribute to continuous improvement of business education. Recognition of teaching excellence is one way we achieve this goal,” he stated.

ACBSP’s mission is to promote continuous improvement and recognize excellence in the accreditation of business education programs around the world. ACBSP is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) as a specialized accreditation agency for business education. ACBSP currently has 1,051 member campuses, 154 of which are located outside of the U.S. Of those campuses, 541 have achieved accreditation and more than 488 are in candidacy for accreditation. Individual members on these campuses now exceed 9,700.
