Committees: Bylaws

Purpose of the Committee

The Bylaws Committee continuously reviews the bylaws and makes recommendations as deemed appropriate; receives and reviews proposed bylaw changes or amendments from the membership, commissioners, and/or directors; and makes recommendations as deemed appropriate.

Committee Projects

During the past several years, the Bylaws Committee under the leadership of its Chair, L. Michael Lopez, and Vice Chair, Sharon Collins, has been hard at work transforming and rewriting the ACBSP Bylaws into a true governance document. This very complicated task was accomplished through a continuous flow of communication between the Committee and the various accreditation and governing boards as well as from key team members. This document received unanimous approval by the membership last June at ACBSP Conference 2017 in Anaheim, California.

This year, the Committee has commenced work on a revised Policies & Procedures Handbook as well as on a bylaws template that can be utilized by our regions to improve their existing bylaws.

Your Pathway to Involvement

The Committee welcomes members from all regions who can write in clear prose and are interested in the internal legal rules that govern the organization. Although it is helpful to have a legal background (several attorneys have served on the Committee), legal experience is not required. We try to avoid language that is overly complex. Members may be asked to participate in sub-committees that meet during scheduled conference calls throughout the year.
