Leadership Institute

In its second year, this two-day Institute is designed for current deans and prospective deans to provide them with the leadership skills required in their role as head of the business unit. The focus this year will be on Strategic Planning and Strategic Leadership. This Institute builds on the content presented during the 2012-13 Seminar Series and experiences shared there as they relate to deans and department chairs.

This session will be led by Olin Oedekoven who serves as President and CEO of Peregrine Academic Services and Peregrine Leadership Institute and Annette Craven who led the Leadership Institute presentations in 2012 and serves as professor of management at the University of the Incarnate Word and managing partner of QPR Associates, LLC. Both will draw on their work in conducting presentations during the Seminar Series and with their affiliated companies. Here are several of the topics that that will be presented:

  1. Envisioning – creating and maintaining a strategic perspective for yourself and the business unit. Understanding how to assess the organization.
  2. Developing Frames of Reference – making sense of the often uncertain and ambiguous strategic environment; dealing with uncertainty, and how to stay focused on leading the organization towards the strategic vision. Dealing with change and how to more effectively lead change.
  3. Using your Mission/Vision/Values to create and sustain the right culture for the organization and shaping employee responses.
  4. Strategic Planning – more than just as an accreditation-related requirement, it’s the process that shapes culture and collective effort within the organization. How the process of strategic planning leads towards shaping the culture and climate of the employees.
  5. The Art of Strategic Leadership – the roles, responsibilities, skills, and actions for the strategic leader. How to put your strategic plan into action and assess the results.

The session will include a "mini” strategic planning session; however the overall seminar will focus on strategic leadership, not just on strategic planning.

Registration and Fees

The cost is $289 for the first member attendee/$209 for the second member attendee/$349 for a nonmember attendee. Registration for this event is entirely separate from the Annual Conference. The workshop will take place over a day and a half. On Thursday, June 20, participants will attend a Networking Luncheon, followed by afternoon and evening consultation. Morning sessions will begin the morning of Friday, June 21, followed by the Opening Luncheon of the ACBSP Annual Conference.

Annette E. Craven, Ph.D. is a past president of ACBSP, professor of management at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, and managing partner of QPR Associates, LLC. She has a Ph.D. in higher education administration and human communications from the University of Denver, master’s degrees in human relations and adult education from the University of Oklahoma, and a B.S. in business administration from the College of the Ozarks. She is an Illinois-licensed CPA and served as a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Program Examiner from 2007-2009 and senior examiner in 2011. Under her leadership as president of ACBSP, the Committee for Scholar-Practitioners Publications was formed and the first scholarly journal, The Annual Edition: Recognizing Excellence in Business Education, created. She has many years of experience in higher education governance and strategic planning, assessment, and quality improvement.

Olin Oedekoven is President & CEO of Peregrine Academic Services based in Gillette, Wyoming. His company provides a variety of online educational services associated with business school accreditation and assessment. His background and experience are quite diverse including 20 years as a wildlife biologist with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, 33 years in the U.S. Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserves (retired in 2011 as a Brigadier General), and most recently as owner of both Peregrine Academic Services and the Peregrine Leadership Institute. His undergraduate degree is from South Dakota State University and his graduate degrees are from the University of Wyoming (MS), the U.S. Army War College (MSS), and Northcentral University (MBA and PhD).
