The ABC’s of Writing Effective Student Learning Outcomes

Janice Stoudemire, founder and president of Palmetto Academic Consulting Services, Inc., is recognized as a national leader and advocate for outcomes assessment and student learning outcomes with a focus on providing support for faculty dealing with the day-to-day challenges in educational assessment and planning. She regularly makes presentations and conducts workshops at national conferences and also delivers presentations online. Stoudemire recently retired from Midlands Technical College (MTC) after 25 years of teaching and serving as the co-director of MTC’s Assessment Institute. In addition, she was responsible for the developing and deploying a college-wide student learning outcomes process at MTC.

Her dedication to the field of education has won her more than 25 accolades at local, state and national levels including Teaching Excellence – Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) - Region III, S.C. Governor’s Distinguished Professor, WebCT’s Digital Content Leader Award, and Southern Region’s Outstanding Faculty Member Award from the Association of Community College Trustees. Stoudemire was honored with the "ACBSP Star Award,” presented by the ACBSP staff in recognition of her volunteer leadership. Also, ACBSP Region 3 awarded her with an "Outstanding Service Citation.”

Her credentials include CPA, ABA, ATA, five years of professional work experience, a master's degree in accountancy, and a site evaluator and mentor for ACBSP, as well as a past evaluator and consultant for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). She was also a member of the national committee responsible for creating and designing the first ever Educational Testing Center’s (ETS) Major Field Test for two-year business programs. Stoudemire is an emeritus member of ACBSP. She served on the Board of Directors from 2005-11 and on the Associate Degree Commission from 2003-08 (chair from 2005-08).

Annette E. Craven, Ph.D. is a past president of ACBSP, professor of management at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, and managing partner of QPR Associates, LLC. She has a Ph.D. in higher education administration and human communications from the University of Denver, master’s degrees in human relations and adult education from the University of Oklahoma, and a B.S. in business administration from the College of the Ozarks. She is an Illinois-licensed CPA and served as a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Program Examiner from 2007-2009 and senior examiner in 2011. Under her leadership as president of ACBSP, the Committee for Scholar-Practitioners Publications was formed and the first scholarly journal, The Annual Edition: Recognizing Excellence in Business Education, created. She has many years of experience in higher education governance and strategic planning, assessment, and quality improvement.

Olin Oedekoven is President & CEO of Peregrine Academic Services based in Gillette, Wyoming. His company provides a variety of online educational services associated with business school accreditation and assessment. His background and experience are quite diverse including 20 years as a wildlife biologist with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, 33 years in the U.S. Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserves (retired in 2011 as a Brigadier General), and most recently as owner of both Peregrine Academic Services and the Peregrine Leadership Institute. His undergraduate degree is from South Dakota State University and his graduate degrees are from the University of Wyoming (MS), the U.S. Army War College (MSS), and Northcentral University (MBA and PhD).

Denise Naugib is Vice President of Sustainability and Supplier Diversity, Global Operations Services at Marriott International. Denise was born in Cairo, Egypt where she lived for half of her childhood before moving to Michigan, Minnesota, and finally Oregon. She attended the University of Oregon, earning a Bachelors of Science in Geography with an emphasis on biological and human impacts on the environment. After graduating, Denise became involved with Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society as a Program Director, implementing environmental education programs at various locations.

In 2005, Denise moved to the Cayman Islands to implement Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment program at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman. Denise became the Corporate Director, Environmental Programs for The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company and led environmental strategy for the brand, as well as supporting the growth of the Cousteau program within The Ritz-Carlton. In January 2010, Denise joined the Global Operations Services group at Marriott International and continued her work on sustainability strategy for all brands, as well as expansion of the Cousteau program. In August 2011, Denise was promoted to Senior Director, Sustainability where she supported Marriott’s Global Green Council and the integration of sustainability in all the hotel operations disciplines. Denise is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or LEED Green Associate and is pursuing LEED Accredited Professional for Existing Buildings. In 2012, Denise was named Vice President of Sustainability and Supplier Diversity, integrating both of these important subjects in the company’s global operations.

Jonas Haertle is Head of the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) Secretariat in the United Nations Global Compact Office. The mission of the PRME initiative is to inspire and champion responsible management education, research and thought leadership globally. Previously, Mr. Haertle was the coordinator of the UN Global Compact’s Local Networks in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. Prior to joining the United Nations, he worked as a research analyst for the German public broadcasting service Norddeutscher Rundfunk. Mr. Haertle holds a master's degree in European Studies of Hamburg University in Germany. As a Fulbright scholar, he also attained an MSc degree in Global Affairs from Rutgers University in the USA.

Dr. James E. Samels (right), president and CEO of The Education Alliance, and Dr. James Martin, academic vice president of The Education Alliance and professor of English at Mount Ida College will speak on Saturday. The Alliance is a full service higher education consulting firm. Their remarks focus on the conference theme, bringing to the stage a presentation based on their work with many ACBSP schools and as authors of a number of books.

Dr. Samels is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of both The Education Alliance and The Samels Group, a full service higher education consulting firm specializing in academic planning and program development, enrollment management, campus, multi-campus and system-wide change management, strategic alliances, new academic program development, executive leadership search and organizational development, international education, and distance learning.

Dr. Martin was the first consultant to join the Samels Group, the precursor to The Education Alliance, in the late 1980s. Since that time, Dr. Martin has joined Dr. Samels in writing, lecturing and consulting to institutions of higher education and other non-profit organizations, nationally and internationally. Samels and Martin are authors of several books from Johns Hopkins, the most recent of which is Turnaround: Leading Stressed Colleges and Universities to Excellence (2009).
