Setting the Table for Success
Setting the Table for Success, an ACBSP Leadership Institute for new and prospective deans and program chairs will be offered June 14-15, immediately prior to the 2012 ACBSP Annual Conference.
Gregory O'Brien, Ph.D., President, The Higher Education Group, Inc. and Annette E. Craven, Ph.D., Professor and Faculty Senate President, University of the Incarnate Word, and ACBSP Immediate Past President will conduct the Leadership Institute.
The cost is $289 for the first member attendee/$209 for the second member attendee/$349 for a nonmember attendee. Registration for this event is entirely separate from the Annual Conference. Registration is now open; begin the process today.
The workshop will take place over a day and a half. On Thursday, June 14, participants will attend a Networking Luncheon, followed by afternoon and evening consultation. Morning sessions will begin the morning of Friday, June 15, followed by the Opening Luncheon of the ACBSP Annual Conference.
The presentations offer techniques for problem analysis and building consensus, support and momentum, with a focus on both external and internal issues. Participants will select and outline problems or projects in advance. Small group sessions provide consultation opportunities. A network group will be formed for follow-up after the conclusion of the workshop.

Workshop Goals and Objectives
This workshop will assist current and prospective deans and program chairs with:
- Building a shared vision and support for the dean’s/chair’s core agenda within the faculty and university.
- Learning how to establish/enhance your school’s profile in the business community to build financial support.
- Establishing yourself as your “own style” of leader.
- Communicating your goals and vision for your school (with faculty, central administration, students and the community).
- Positioning your school in the community for support.
- Building your school’s shared vision and strategic plan.
- Enhancing communication within the school.
- Positioning the school within the university.
- Establishing and positioning the school in the community.
- Succession planning and preparing for leadership.
- Address some typical “thorny” personnel problems.
Presenters
Gregory O’Brien, Ph.D. is president of The Higher Education Group, Inc., a consulting group focused on strategic planning, organizational strategy, accreditation, quality assurance, acquisitions and joint ventures in higher education. He is distinguished president emeritus of the 19 campus Argosy University System and of the Argosy Education Group. Before joining Argosy University, Dr. O’Brien served as chancellor of the University of New Orleans for 16 years, where he also taught psychology and public affairs. Previous positions include provost and vice president of Academic Affairs at the University of South Florida, provost of the University of Michigan-Flint and dean of the School of Social Welfare at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. He received a Ph.D. and master’s degree in social psychology from Boston University. He earned his B.A., with honors, from Lehigh University. Dr. O’Brien has served as vice chair of the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and chair of the Board, National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, chair of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) President’s Commission and president of The American College of Mental Health Administration. Dr. O’Brien has been awarded honorary degrees from Lehigh University and Western State University College of Law. He was awarded the U.S. Navy’s Meritorious Service Award.
Annette E. Craven, Ph.D. is the immediate past-president of the ACBSP, professor of management at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, and managing partner of QPR Associates, LLC. She has a Ph.D. in higher education administration and human communications from the University of Denver, master’s degrees in human relations and adult education from the University of Oklahoma, and a B.S. in business administration from the College of the Ozarks. She is an Illinois-licensed CPA and served as a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Program Examiner from 2007-2009 and senior examiner in 2011. Under her leadership as president of ACBSP, the Committee for Scholar-Practitioners Publications was formed and the first scholarly journal, The Annual Edition: Recognizing Excellence in Business Education, created. She has many years of experience in higher education governance and strategic planning, assessment, and quality improvement.
