2012 Annual Conference

Pre-Conference Workshops

Two pre-conference workshops are being offered this year, "Completing the Student Learning Process" and “How to Ensure That Students Prepare for Class So That Class Time Can Be Used for Deep Learning”. Additionally, an entirely separate Leadership Institute is being held before the Conference. Visit the Leadership Institute page for complete details and registration.

The two pre-conference workshops are optional events with an additional registration fee paid with the Annual Conference registration fee (see fees below).

Completing the Student Learning Process - Friday, June 15

Assessing student learning and collecting data is only part of the assessment process. Completing the cycle requires the analysis and interpretation of the data collected, the implementation of a change for improvement and then the follow-up to determine whether the change deployed actually improved student learning. Wouldn't it be beneficial to follow an assessment measure from its creation to closing the loop? This workshop will do just that. Sample forms and rubrics will be provided. In addition, an example of holistically assessing program outcomes will be presented.

Former ACBSP president Janice Stoudemire of Palmetto Academic Consulting Services will present this workshop. Janice has led the pre-conference workshops for the past two years, and each year, the events were sold-out and over-sold. Register early to secure a seat.

This workshop will be held on Friday, June 15, from 8:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

How to Ensure That Students Prepare for Class So That Class Time Can Be Used for Deep Learning -
Friday, June 15

This session will describe: (1) How the presenters use the definitional grading system and class preparation assignments in undergraduate and graduate economics courses to ensure that students come to class prepared; (2) How they use active learning teaching strategies to leverage student preparation to produce highly interactive classes and deep learning.

The session will show data concerning student learning and will examine:

  1. The definitional grading system and its use in class preparation assignments to ensure that students come to class prepared.
  2. Common pitfalls to avoid.
  3. How to adjust the type of class preparation assignment questions during the course and across courses.
  4. Several active learning strategies used to engage students in their learning.
  5. Student survey data that demonstrates the value of class preparation assignments to students.
  6. Data that demonstrates increased student learning.
  7. How this teaching mechanism can be applied to online classes.

Dr. Lynn Gillette is President of Sierra Nevada College and was a presenter on this topic during a concurrent session at the 2011 Annual Conference. It was the highest rated session based on submitted evaluations. The room was filled to capacity.

This workshop will be held on Friday, June 15, from 8:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

Registration Fees

The registration fee for each workshop is $75 per person.

If you are planning to attend the Annual Conference, you must register for either pre-conference workshop using the online registration system. If you decide at a later date you want to attend a workshop, we can add it to your registration.
