New Jersey City University has named the interim dean of its School of Business to the permanent role, it announced Thursday.

Bernard McSherry, who has been a faculty member and interim dean of the NJCU school since June 2014, was named founding dean following a nationwide search.

“With the growing influx of new business in Jersey City and the school’s location in the heart of the financial district, NJCU has an important role to play in the economic vitality and expansion of the region,” President Sue Henderson said in a prepared statement. “Under Dean McSherry, the NJCU School of Business will be able to take the lead in these efforts.”

McSherry, a former governor of the New York Stock Exchange, has more than 30 years of experience in the business and financial world. In addition to his time with NYSE, he has worked for Cuttone & Company, Prudential Equity Group, SunGard Global Execution Services and his own firm, McSherry & Company.

He has been part of the NJCU faculty since 2011.

McSherry has a doctorate from Pace University’s Lubin School of Business and an MBA from Stern School of Business at New York University, as well as a bachelor’s degree from Wagner College.

The business programs offered through the NJCU School of Business have been accredited by ACBSP since 2002.
