Accrediting Bodies Convene To Discuss International Accreditation Standards

November 19, 2012

Business education leaders and accrediting bodies from across the globe convened in late October in Italy to discuss international accreditation standards at the XVI International Russian Association of Business Education (RABE) Conference, dubbed "Business Education and Business School 2020: New Trends, Models, and Opportunities.”

"It is our hope that by providing comment and advice in the creation of a national accreditation system to replace the process that was in place previously, the new system will have elements that enable schools that receive this national accreditation in Russia will have some elements for entering the international business school accreditation process and meeting global standards,” said Douglas Viehland, Executive Director of ACBSP. According to the Financial Times, it is estimated there are 150 business schools in Russia offering MBA programs.

During the conference, accrediting bodies in attendance were requested to review and sign the "Declaration of the World Management Development Organizations in Support of Independent Quality Assessment System in Russia.”

Viehland signed the Declaration and was part of a panel of that presented "Business School Associations: Opportunities of Co-operation and Challenges of Competition. How to Develop Synergetic Model and Mutually Beneficial Activities for the Future.”

"This declaration is evidence to government and business leaders in Russia that there is support for the work by RABE that is underway and they have support and cooperation from global accrediting bodies. RABE is not an accrediting body. It gives them credibility to their work underway,” added Viehland.

Among the attendees were representatives from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International), Central Eastern European Association for Management Development (CEEMAN), European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), and the Italian Association for Management Education (ASFOR). The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC).
