The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), a specialized accreditation agency for business schools, is continuing its evolution from a U.S.-based organization to one with a more global reach.

"The U.S. market is pretty much saturated now,” said Peter Horn, new president of the Board of Directors for the ACBSP. "There just hasn’t been the growth in business schools in the U.S. to satisfy (accreditation) organizations that are growing. We’ve looked outside the U.S. where the new schools are growing.

"International schools are in need of a quality control to help them,” Horn said. In the U.S., colleges and universities must first be regionally accredited from one of the six regional accreditation bodies nationwide to earn specialized accreditation from organizations like ACBSP. This is not the case overseas.

"The regional accreditation is sort of a quality control filter,” said Horn. "In France, for example, private schools in particular don’t have a quality control mechanism built in, so accreditation is a new process for them.”

ACBSP was a featured presenter at two Latin American conferences aimed at increasing the quality of business education. Held in Lima, Peru at the University of San Martin De Porres, ACBSP Director of Accreditation Steve Parscale and ACBSP Executive Director Douglas Viehland both presented at the inaugural International Accreditation Congress, which focused on laying the groundwork for setting management standards to guarantee best practices and ensure professional development and excellence in quality — key elements in distinguishing quality educational institutions.

At the International Congress on Trends and Challenges in Business Management, Ricardo Fernández, General Manager of IBM del Perú SAC, presented the results of one of the most important global studies regarding the state and challenges for CEOs in business management. The global study is part of the IBM C-Suite Study Series. Other presentations addressed current trends and challenges in business management, corporate social responsibility, and success in establishing client relations.

ACBSP has 16 Latin American universities in membership. Universidad Argentina de la Empresa became the first Latin American university to achieve ACBSP accreditation in 2006. Now six universities are accredited and 10 more are in candidacy for accreditation. In 2009, ACBSP established the Latin American Council of Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP Region 9) representing member campuses in Argentina, Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Trinidad and Tobago.

In total, ACBSP currently has 1,134 member campuses, 167 of which are located outside of the U.S.

Horn also believes strongly international travel is beneficial to all MBA students, regardless of their concentration, and it is important for students making the effort to travel during their studies to know they are receiving a quality experience. At International School of Management (ISM) in Paris, where Horn is chancellor, there are as many 20 different nationalities in a class of 30 MBA students.

"The feedback I get from our students is how students from different backgrounds would tackle a problem differently and that experience isn’t something you can pick up from a book,” said Horn. "It’s important that all MBA students get some international exposure, whether it’s a study abroad or just a tour. Chances are the business they end up working for will operate internationally, and if they have international experience, it gives the student a definite advantage.”
