Overland Park, KS (November 1, 2011) –The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), www.acbsp.org, has received official recognition from the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) for a second time. Founded in 1988, ACBSP is a leading specialized accreditation council for business education, supporting, celebrating, and rewarding teaching excellence.

The Council for Higher Education Accreditation issued the following statement: "At its meeting on September 19-20, 2011, the CHEA Board of Directors reviewed the recommendation of the CHEA Committee on Recognition regarding the recognition application submitted by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs. The Board of Directors accepted the committee's recommendation and granted recognition to the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs." Recommendation decision summaries are available on the CHEA website, www.chea.org.

In August of 1992, ACBSP was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a specialized accreditation agency for business education. That recognition continued through April 1996, when the Department of Education changed its policies to recognize only those agencies that impacted the distribution of federal funding. To fill the resulting void for a national body to recognize accrediting agencies, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) was created in 1996. At its meeting on January 22, 2001, the CHEA Board of Directors reviewed the recommendations of the CHEA Committee on Recognition regarding the recommendation and recognized ACBSP. The 2006 CHEA Recognition Policy and Procedures (#16, p.9) provide that, at a minimum, the accrediting organization will undergo a recognition review every 10 years.

In granting continued recognition, CHEA approved a revised scope for ACBSP. The new CHEA-recognized scope of recommendation states:ACBSP accredits business, accounting, and business-related programs at the associate, baccalaureate, master, and doctorate degree levels worldwide.

Douglas Viehland, executive director, stated, "ACBSP is proud of our recognition by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. We look forward to continuing to work with CHEA to advance the value and strength of accreditation in the measurement of quality and in advancing continuous improvement in higher education."
